Critical Alert: The Swine Flu Pandemic - Fact or Fiction?
By Dr. Mercola

American health officials declared a public health emergency as cases of swine flu were confirmed in the U.S.

Health officials across the world fear this could be the leading edge of a global pandemic emerging from Mexico, where seven people are confirmed dead as a result of the new virus.

On Monday April 27th, the World Health Organization (WHO) raised its pandemic alert level to four on its six-level threat scale, which means they've determined that the virus is capable of human-to-human transmission. The initial outbreaks across North America reveal an infection already traveling at higher velocity than did the last official pandemic strain, the 1968 Hong Kong flu.

The number of fatalities, and suspected and confirmed cases across the world change depending on the source, so your best bet -- if you want the latest numbers -- is to use Google Maps' Swine Flu Tracker.

Several nations have imposed travel bans, or made plans to quarantine air travelers that present symptoms of the swine flu, such as:

  • Fever of more than 100
  • Coughing
  • Runny nose and/or sore throat
  • Joint aches
  • Severe headache
  • Vomiting and/or diarrhea
  • Lethargy
  • Lack of appetite

Top global flu experts are trying to predict how dangerous the new swine flu strain will be, as it became clear that they had little information about Mexico's outbreak. It is as yet unclear how many cases occurred in the month or so before the outbreak was detected. It's also unknown whether the virus was mutating to be more lethal, or less.

Chiropractic & Migraines

Subluxations are tiny distortions in your body that interfere with the communications between your brain, nerves and body parts. This can create intense stress in your system.

Chiropractors correct subluxations so your energies flow more freely, communication returns and your body stress levels drop. No matter what the disease or condition you are healthier and happier when your subluxations are corrected. (1)

There are many studies showing the benefits of chiropractic for migraine sufferers. For example, in one study chiropractic care resulted in a reduction of 90% of migraine episodes with the length of each migraine reduced by 38%. In addition, medication use dropped 94% and other symptoms associated with migraine such as nausea, vomiting, photophobia and phonophobia (light and sound sensitivity) were reduced. (2)

In another study, a 28-year-old woman with 15 years of severe migraines, irregular menstrual cycles and inability to conceive began chiropractic care. Within two months the migraines completely ceased. A regular menstrual cycle began 7 weeks into care and within 6 months she became pregnant. (3)

A ten-year-old girl was unable to go to school due to her six times a week migraines. Three years of medical care afforded no relief. After five chiropractic adjustments she was migraine-free. (4)

Anyone suffering from headaches of any type would do well to see their chiropractor to ensure that they are free of subluxations. If there are subluxations, no amount of drugs will correct them—a chiropractic adjustment is essential.

DCs Rated Higher Than MDs In Consumer Reports Survey

A Consumer Reports survey of its readers found that "hands-on" healthcare, led by chiropractic care, were the top-rated for people suffering from low back pain.

Fifty-eight percent of those in the survey of 12,000 Consumer Reports readers rated chiropractic/spinal manipulation as helping a lot for those suffering from back pain and that chiropractors are the best at providing real relief followed by massage (48%) and physical therapy (46%). Consumers were more likely to be "highly satisfied" with their care from their chiropractors (59%) than from their MD (34%). Where are the non-vaccinated people with autism?

Where are the non-vaccinated people with autism? Dan Olmsted did the research that the vaccine industry and media refused to do and found little or no autism in the non-vaccinated.

"I have not seen autism with the Amish," said Dr. Frank Noonan, a family practitioner in Lancaster County, PA, who has treated thousands of Amish for a quarter-century. "You'll find all the other stuff, but we don't find autism. We're right in the heart of Amish country and seeing none, and that's just the way it is."

In Chicago, Homefirst Medical Services treats thousands of never-vaccinated children. Homefirst's medical director, Dr. Mayer Eisenstein, is not aware of any cases of autism in never-vaccinated children; the national rate is 1 in 175, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "We have a fairly large practice," Eisenstein told us. "We have about 30,000 or 35,000 children that we've taken care of over the years, and I don't think we have a single case of autism in children delivered by us who never received vaccines." Splenda™ - a dangerous sugar substitute

In a recent study the artificial sweetener Splenda™ reduced the amount of good bacteria in the intestines by 50%, increased the pH level in the intestines, contributed to increases in body weight and sometimes caused drugs to be shunted back into the intestines, rather than being absorbed by the body.

James Turner, the chairman of the national consumer education group Citizens for Health, expressed shock and outrage after reading a new report from scientists outlining the dangers of Splenda™ (sucralose). "The report makes it clear that the artificial sweetener Splenda and its key component sucralose pose a threat to the people who consume the product. Hundreds of consumers have complained to us about side effects from using Splenda™ and this study ... confirms that the chemicals in the little yellow package should carry a big red warning label." Optimists live longer and healthier lives

Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh looked at rates of death and chronic health conditions among participants in the Women's Health Initiative study, which has followed nearly 100,000 women ages 50 and over since 1994.

Women who were optimistic - those who expect good rather than bad things to happen and were more trustful of others - were 14% less likely to die from any cause than pessimists and 30% less likely to die from heart disease. (11)

The elderly brain benefits from sunlight

With warmer weather approaching we need to start benefiting from that great source of all life's energy - the sun. Researchers have for the first time identified a relationship between vitamin D deficiency and cognitive impairment in a large-scale study of older people. The study looked at almost 2,000 adults aged 65 and over. As levels of vitamin D went down, levels of cognitive impairment went up. Those with the lowest levels of vitamin D were more than twice as likely to be cognitively impaired. One problem faced by older people is that the capacity of their skin to absorb vitamin D from sunlight decreases as they age. (6)

Did you know?

Societies who eat traditional diets have no cancer, heart disease, arthritis, chronic illness, mental institutions or prisons. These diets include:

• No refined or denatured foods such as refined sugar or corn syrup; no white flour; no canned foods; no pasteurized, homogenized, skim or low-fat milk; no refined or hydrogenated vegetable oils; no protein powders; and no artificial vitamins or toxic additives and colorings.

• All traditional cultures consume some sort of animal protein and fat from fish and other seafood; water and land fowl; land animals; eggs; milk and milk products; and reptiles.

• Primitive diets contain at least four times the calcium and other minerals and TEN times the fat-soluble vitamins from animal fats (vitamin A, vitamin D and the "Price Factor") as the average American diet. (12)

More research on the benefits of breastfeeding

Breastfed infants tend to have higher intelligence than formula-fed infants. This may be due to certain compounds found in breast milk, including omega-3 fatty acids. The verbal IQ of 7 and 8-year-olds who had been breastfed was about 10 points higher than those who were not. Babies who are breastfed naturally spend more time in what is known as the "quiet alert" state, which is not only soothing for parents but also is the state most conducive to the newborn's learning. Chiropractic and spinal research

Fibromyalgia and Chiropractic. Five men and 18 women (11 to 76 years of age) suffering from fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome for 2 to 35 years began chiropractic care. The number of visits ranged from 20 to 48. Every patient improved to such a degree they were able to resume normal activities including full time work at 1 year and 1½ year follow up. The improvement in symptoms ranged from 92 to 100%. (7)

Pelvic Pain and Chiropractic.
For 18 years a woman suffered with diarrhea, pelvic pain and reduced genital sensitivity. Because of reduced genital sensitivity, she had been unable to experience orgasm and had pelvic pain during intercourse. MDs treated her with an appendectomy for abdominal pain (appendix was normal), partial hysterectomy and left oophorectomy (tube removal). In addition, three exploratory bowel surgeries for chronic diarrhea, pain, rectal bleeding and mucous discharge and four bladder surgeries were performed without resolution of her problems. Within eight weeks of her first chiropractic adjustment there was a complete resolution of symptoms including pelvic pain and diarrhea. Genital sensitivity improved and she was able to achieve orgasm on a regular basis. (8)

Don't panic
- all is well (?)

Perhaps everyone taking a medication or using a medical procedure should panic - at least a little. A report published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that a majority of major medical studies were eventually contradicted. Dr. John Ioannidis, author of the study was quoted in Newsweek (July 25, 2005) giving the following advice: "The general public should not panic (about studies published, then refuted). We all need to start thinking more critically." (10)

This is not the first time it was found that most medical studies are reversed. However, people take drugs based on those studies. People suffer reactions and even die based on those studies. Despite the results of this review article, most likely nothing will change. Drug use will continue to skyrocket as our health continues to deteriorate. People must begin to look beyond the medical approach in their search for health. That means exploring non-medical approaches such as chiropractic, homeopathy, naturopathy, nutrition, Chinese and Indian (Ayurvedic) healthcare systems. These approaches are generally more natural and far safer than dangerous drugs and most medical procedures.
